KIHLSTEDT/ROBAIR/SPERRY TRIO - SONARCHY 1998(mm 6)
In November of 1998, the trio of Carla Kihlstedt (violin), Gino Robair (percussion/piano) & Matthew Sperry (contrabass) recorded a session for Sonarchy Radio in Seattle. Coming up on a decade later, you now have the chance to listen to this incredible session - sounding as if it could have been recorded yesterday or forty years ago, existing on a plane of living music as it does.
There isn’t enough space here to chronicle the incredible music that these three are responsible for. Playing in groups as diverse as Tin Hat Trio, 2 Foot Yard, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and more while somehow finding time for solo pursuits, Carla Kihlstedt has to be rated as one of the most inventive violin players currently performing.
In the world of improvised music, it might be easier to come up with a list of major players that Gino Robair hasn’t yet performed with than those that he has, although his work with John Butcher and Gianni Gebbia may be among his most fruitful in this area. He is also a member of The Splatter Trio and has performed with some pretty big names in the music world and has written an opera about Emperor Norton titled ”I, Norton”.
Matthew Sperry is a sorely missed forced in the world of creative music. As stylistically diverse and skilled as his cohorts on this date, Matthew brought an intense energy and intelligence to his bass playing that would be the envy of someone twice his age. The music presented here is dedicated to his memory.
Sonarchy presents these players in top form operating in an improvised context. The interplay here is incredible – the musicians shared a great empathy on this date, this is everything you hope for in an improvised musical experience.
